This was not only my first marathon but my first race of any distance since I was about 9 years old.  I was new to everything about the race.  (I started running distances over 3 miles about a year ago) My Goal was to get 2:59.59 to break 3 hours.  Everyones advice before the race was to take it easy for the first half because they said your body will lie to you and tell you to run faster than you should.  I kept track with my Garmin and was trying to stay close to the 6:52 mile pace that is required to break 3 hours but Veyo knocked me back from that average.  (I had done no hill work for the 3 months preciding the marathon because of calf injuries)  i hit halfway at about a 1:32.30 but I felt fine and kept trying to run fast enough to bring the average on my watch closer to 6:52.  I was actually amazed how fast the miles kept coming up and I was at 20 before I knew it.  I was thinking I might get my sub 3 finish.  About mile 22 my right hamstring felt like it was cramping I slowed just a little and it went away and was able to speed back up.  I gave it everything I possibly could till the finish line running about a 6:38 pace for the last 4 miles but I came up 21 seconds short of my goal.  My watch actually said 6:52 on the homestretch but then corrected itself back to 6:53.  I was really disappointed in not pulling off my time.  I did qualify for Boston and I did win my division but 2:59 is so much better than 3:00.

I learned that to negative split is good but not by so much as I did.   I did the second half around 4 minutes faster than the first.  I would have got my time had I run the first 7 miles just a little bit faster.  Next year Ill know better.

Nice job at St George! I was wondering what the winner of the weight division would come in at. That's a pretty good show of strength.

Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome to the blog. Good job at SG -- looks like you now have super-credentials to apply for a job at Budweiser. :)

This was a really nice local race in American Fork.  About 100 people ran.  This is my first 5K as an adult so it was an automatic PR.

Holy speedy fast!! Great job and excellent job in St George!! I am dumb, but what do you mean by weight under 40? Were you in the "clydesdale" group and under 40??

Regardless, AWESOME JOB! Welcome to the blog.

From Spencer on Sat, Oct 25, 2008 at 22:44:35

Thanks, Yes I was in the Clydesdale under 40 division. Good job to you too. It looks like you did well at St George qualifying for Boston. I appreciate you welcoming me to the blog.

From Kelli on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 10:32:01

You must be tall and muscley (well, I can see the muscles in that picture!)

Way to go!! That is awesome. My husband had to forego the muscles, he could not run and have them at the same time---too much cramping up. He lost 30 pounds (mostly from quitting heavy lifting, but a little fat, too) training for this marathon, but he still cramped up. He really wants to qualify for Boston next year, any suggestions?

From Cheryl on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 19:30:34

You're Spencer from Bingham, class of 1995? I live right across the street from Bingham High and belong to a running group called the Bingham Butt Kickers. We run all over the So. Jordan/Riverton area. You can come join us if you're ever in the area at 5:45am on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Did you run cross country or track at Bingham? Welcome to the blog!!

From Spencer on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 21:48:49

How long is your husband able to run at Marathon qualifying pace? If he can run at the qualifying pace semi comfortably for a half marathon then I think he just needs to work on indurance with more long runs. If he cant do it semi comfortably then I would say to work more on increasing his speed with Intervals, Fartleks and just having some of his runs be faster than marathon pace.

From spencer on Sun, Oct 26, 2008 at 21:58:03

Cheryl, I did not run while at Bingham I played football instead. My older brother and sister Phill and Lora Woolston both ran at Bingham. I hated running but have recently been converted.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 13:28:35

He can run a marathon at about a 7:40 pace. I will tell him to work on the intervals! The problem is that he runs with me, and he needs to not!!! He needs to go faster!!

Have you ever had issues with your muscles cramping up at all?

From Spencer on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 13:33:35

I really have never been a cramper. At St George this year at mile 22 my right hamstring started to seize up but it went away so I am not sure what to do about cramping. Maybe he needs to work harder at hydrating.

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 13:41:15

Well, thanks!! I just figured on muscle man to another...He did do much better this year than last, so we will see!!

Good luck to you in all of your upcoming events. You are an amazing runner for sure!

longest run since st George.  My left hip hurts a bit I think it might be my ciatic (how do you spell that?) nerve.  Im going to stretch my hips more to hope it goes away.

My hip hurt a bit but not bad.  I can tell that running fast really agrivates the hip.  Next week Ill try just going slow.

My arches hurt quite a bit today.  They swelled up a lot a few hours after my run.  Maybe its because this is my first normal mileage week after St. George.

I did .75 miles on the treadmill then stretched out real good and then did 9.28 on the road.  I averaged  7:35 a mile.

My right arch hurt a bit and then towards the end the outside of my right foot hurt.  My left hip hurt just a bit.

I did miles 2,3,4 at 6:18 pace.  I stretched out again after my first mile and I think that will be my ticket to get rid of my hip trouble.  My left hip hurt a little only at times.  It was really pretty ok.  My right arch did not hurt at all but the outside of my right foot below and in front of the ankle hurt a bit  especially my last two miles.

I did a very slow 1.2 mile warmup then stretched out real good.  I then did a mile at 7:45 and then another mile at 7:00.  I then did 6 intervals of 800's at 6:18 pace with 400's at 8:30 pace in between.  I finished it off with a slow jog.

My right foot below my ankle hurt the whole time.  It is tendor to touch.  My right arch also hurt.  My left hip was not bad today.

1.2 mile warm up, then a long stretch, finished with 6 miles at 7:13 pace.

The 7:13 pace felt moderately easy.  It wasnt a challenge but i felt like I was getting more benefit than at a slower pace.  My left hip hurt a little toward the middle.  My right arch hurt a little throughout. The area of my right foot below the ankle hurt a bit to start and I was worried about it but then it went away completely and I diddnt notice it at all for the rest of the run.

very very easy, very very slow average pace of about 8:30.  I hate going slow.  I don't feel any accomplishment from slow running, but I need to start to go slow more often or I'm just going to keep hurting myself.

My left hip did not hurt at all.  My right arch hurt the entire time.  the area of my right foot below the ankle did not hurt at all.

Before the race as I warmed up my left Achilles started to hurt. This is a recurring problem that keeps coming back. I should have gotten in the car and come home and rested it and iced it. I know I shouldnt have raced but I couldnt help myself. The Achilles hurt a little during the race but then afterward it has really flared up. I have iced it for 20 minutes a total of 5 times today and I will continue the ice and ibuprofen tommorrow. At least I took second place. There were well over 200 runners but a lot were non runner neighborhood people coming out to support Austin Shamy who is suffering from a rare disease. the race was a fundraiser to help with medical expenses. I'ts a tear jerker story and I hope the best for the family. the course was short of 5k it was only 3.00 miles exactly on my garmin.

The course was extremely hilly.  It was up and down the whole time with the final 1/3 mile staight up hill.  About the worst conditions to race on a sore Achilles.

My left achilles is sore so I did 60 minutes on the stationary bike and then ten minutes on an eliptical.  This was my first time on a bike in about 6 months and my first time on an eliptical ever. Ice and ibuprofen today.
